Managerial Routines

MANAGEMENT

Established Routines

Effective routines contributes significantly to the smooth operation of any classroom and unless you pay particular attention to their operation you may not even be aware of them.  Routines provide students with a guide, it helps them to know how you will act and react to things that arise in a classroom setting. If you are consistent with your routines students will function better within the structure that you have provided, causing things to go smoothly. Students will hopefully become more comfortable in my class and make better use of their time.

 1)    Distribution and collection of materials? For distribution  of materials 2 people will pass them all out to the class. For tests and assisgment distribution the teacher will personally hand them back. As for collection, the first person in each row will get out of their seats and walk down there row and collect the material.

 2)   Bathroom privileges? Give each person 3 minutes, only one student at a time. If it is always the same people going  revise the situation further.

 3)   Dismissal?  Finish up  classes right at the bell, leaving no free time. No one will leave early, and no one will be standing by the door. Try and always to be conscious of time.

 4)   Starting an activity or at the beginning of class? Stand at the front of the class and give students a few seconds to settle in and be quite. Then one time verbally give them directions to be quite. Use the student’s names to get their attention if they continue to talk. Try and use attention grabbers to get their attention like turning the lights off, and be proactive.

 5)  Classroom housekeeping duties? Have a rotating list of student’s names and duties that would change on a weekly basis. Do not use it as a punishment. Try and have it thought out and be organized about it.

 6)  Appropriate strip? Proper strip, which is shorts or sweat pants and and a t shirt or sweat shirt  is very important, marks will be given if it is brought consistently, under participation sections of marks. No one sits out, they are involved some how, ex: score keeping. Try and have extra lost and found clothing that students can where and use for that day.

 7)  Speaking in class? If the teacher is talking to the class no one else is talking, if students want to speak and ask a questions them they will need to put up their hands and wait for acknowledgement.  In the beginning of classes,  be very firm on this rule.

 8)   Breaking into small group activities?  Try and avoid groups of friends being in the same group.  Prepare the group list’s before hand that way you control  who is with who. For assisgments outside of class  allow friends to be in pairs.  If you cannot prepare groups before class, divide the students by numbering them off.

 9)   Use of free time? They need to act responsibly or that time will be taken away. If they have done all their work then they can work on homework from another class. Allow them a school related task to work on.
