BLOCK PLAN - Four lesson Basketball unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  Depending on the response of students this progression could be adapted. Links on block plan go to task/game explanation including teaching points, organization, diagram and image or video clip (Hopper, 2000).
 
 

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem

Lesson focus: To observe the general concept knowledge and skill ability of the class
Skill objective: 
1. Shooting accuracy 
2. Dribbling consistency

Introductory task/game

 Bump
1.  2 balls per basket.  First person shoots and the person behind them tries to eliminate them by scoring before the first person does.  Once person has scored pass the ball back to the start of the line and return to the end 
a) if person is eliminated they must perform in a dribbling obstacle course and return to the bump game when it is completed

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

    1.  Simon Says dribbling...
    1 versus 1 dribbling drill with one person giving feedback to attacker while another person gives feedback to defender
    3.  Alley game

Culminating Game: 

  • 3 on 3 round robin game tournament
 
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
 Maintaining possession
Supporting the ball carrier
Losing the defender

Lesson focus:  Dribbling, passing 
Skill objective: 
1. Triple threat 
2. Passing--chest, bounce, overhead

Introductory task/game

Sharks
1.  Everyone in a large grid dribbling a ball.  Goal is to hit others' balls out of the grid.  If your ball is knocked outside the grid, you become a shark that tries to hit the remaining players' balls away. 

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

1. 2 versus 2
 -Complete 3 or more passes before shooting.
 - No dribbling
2.  3 versus 0 grid
3.  3 person weave
4.  British bulldogs

Culminating Game: 

  • 4 on 4 half court
 
Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
Preventing Scoring
Keeping possession of the ball

Lesson focus: To have students perform proper defensive positioning,  and recognize proper off the ball positioning in a basketball game situation
Skill objective: 
1.  Understand and apply proper defensive stance and glide.
2. Exhibit active hands and feet, as well as a low body position.
3. Display knowledge of on and off the ball movements and demonstrate knowledge of effective footwork to play proper defence in basketball.

Introductory task/game

 Alley game
1.  Maintaining possession of the ball
2.  Trying to score on opponent by passing the ball into their end zone
3.  Prevent scoring by cutting off passing lanes and person to person defence

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

1.  3 versus 2 Grid game
2.  Zigzag drill 
3.  Alley game

Culminating Game: 
3 versus 3 
Defence- 1 point for a turnover or steal
Offence- 2 points for a basket or 1 point for getting the ball into target on floor

Lesson 4
Tactical Problem
 Preventing scoring
Defending the basket
Winning the ball

Lesson focus: Defensive rebounding and outlet passing
Skill objective:
1. Boxing out, pivot and sit on opponents knees restricting their movement
2. Timing the jump
3. Supporting rebounder and quick breaks
4. Communication

Introductory task/game

Backboard Drill
1. In small groups first person bounces ball off backboard
2. Next person in line times their jump to receive and throw ball off backboard before landing

1. Boxing Out
2. Viking 21
3. Rebound and Outlet drill 

Culminating Game: 
5 on 5 full court tournament
