BLOCK PLAN - Four Lesson Soccer Unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for this unit.  Depending on the response and evident abilities of the students this progression could be adapted.  For links on block plan go to the task/game explanation including teaching points, organization, diagram and image or video clip.
 
 

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
Understanding and incorporating the in-step pass, with a reasonable level of accuracy.
Lesson focus: Components of an in-step pass.

Skill objective: Passing the soccer ball using the 
                       in-step of the foot.

Introductory task/game

Passing soccer ball back and forth with a partner between two cones.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
    1.  Target game
Culminating Game:  3 on 3 Possession and Score
  • 2 cones
  • Score by hitting cones with soccer ball
  • Within a grid
  • Restart play by passing ball into play from sideline
 		 Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
Maintaining possession of the ball and using open space .
Lesson focus: Using the in-step pass to maintain team's 
                      possession.  Understanding concept of 
                      creating and utilizing open space.

Skill objective: Approach to and contact of soccer 
                       ball.  Getting open to receive a 
                       pass/passing into an open space.

Introductory task/game

 Pig in the middle.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1.  Introduce key features of the in-step pass.
2.  Practicing in-step pass in groups of three.
3.  Pass and move.
4.  Keep Away.
Culminating Game: 3 on 3 Possesion and Score #2
  • 2 end lines
  • Score by passing to a teammate across opponents' end line
  • Within a grid
  • Restart play by passing ball into play from sideline
 
Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
Pass and move in a game-like situation.
Lesson focus: Awareness of open space and 
                     getting open to receive a pass.

Skill objective:  Utilizing open space as a tool to 
                        score points. 

Introductory task/game

 Assorted relays.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1.  Pass and move to score.
2.  Pass and move in a crowded area.
3.  Pass and move to beat a defender and score.
Culminating Game: Mini Game Progression

Tactical Problem
 Restarting play in a game situation.
Lesson focus: Within game situation introduce the throw in.
Skill objective: Restarting play using a throw in.

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

1.  Mini game-restarting play by throw ins.
2.  Introduce key features to the throw in.
3.  Practice throw ins in groups of threes.
4.  2 on 1 with throw in.
Culminating Game:  Mini Game Progression with Throw ins.
