Lesson 4 - Underhand Serving (Click here to download full lesson plan)
The Underhand Serve: The purpose of the serve in volleyball is to have the first chance to attack. It is the only movement that is a closed skill and is solely dependent on the player serving (like a foul shot in basketball).
Teaching Points:
- Staggered (Athletic) Stance
- Non-serving hand holds ball in front of body
- Shift weight from back foot to forward foot (students can step forward with front foot if they feel necessary)
- Turn wrist of non-hitting hand goes to side of ball (pour the sugar)
- Contact ball with hitting hand while ball is at waist height
- Follow through with hitting hand to shoulder height
- Emphasis weight transfer to get power
End Ball (8 min)
Purpose is to get students HR elevated and ready to be active
Rules:
Cannot run/dribble with ball
5 second possession time with ball
if ball contacts ground, possession goes to other team
Scoring:
Team scores by placing ball on ground past the end line

Fuukahara Game (10 min)
Idea is to have students moving vertically and laterally inside court boundaries. Working with a teammate to release and cover space to create tactical advantages over opponents.
Rules:
-Ball must be rolled under net.
-Player can only touch the ball once before teammate touches
-Teams get up to three hits to get the ball across the midline
-Ball must be hit along the ground
-No “Blocking”
Scoring:
-Teams score when ball roles out the back of their opponents court.
Starting to Serve: 5 min
Players serve from the attack line over the net to a partner. Upon a successful serve, players take one “regular’ step back towards the service line. Game concludes when players reach the end line and are able to successfully underhand serve over the net
Turkey Shoot: 7 min
Place various objects on the floor of the court
Ex: Hula hoop, ball bin, etc.
Place these objects in places on a volleyball court that are more difficult to hit with a serve (close to the net, in the corners) Players get points for hitting targets
