On and off-ball movement drills


Lay-Up Drill

Activity: Lay-ups on the right and left hand side.

(see video example below)


Teaching Cues:

  1. -Right hand side, right knee up with right hand. (ex: string attached from elbow to the knee)

  2. -Left hand side, left knee up with left hand.

  3. -Should aim for top corner of the square on back board.

  4. -Smooth rhythm is important when doing a lay-up, avoiding jerky or off balance movements will increase success rate. (see video below)

Dribbling

Activity 1:

Group dribbling, following instructions in a Command Style of teaching.


Activity 2:

Dribbling course, students follow one another through a series of dribbling activities.

Teaching Cues:

  1. -Keep head and eyes up.

  2. -Use pads of fingers, not palm.

  3. -Don’t slap at the ball, but cushion it (feel the ball on the way up).

  4. -Use off arm to protect basketball from defender.

  5. -Stay in control, do what you (as the dribbler) is comfortable with.
