Learning Outcomes for Lesson Two

- Students will be able to shoot with proper technique

- Students will be able to shoot more accurately

- Students will be able to shoot with consistent technique from many different spots on the court

  1. -Students will be able to shoot under pressure from defenders

Equipment: balls, cones, pinnies, hoops

Warm up

Aim:

1. Students will play a version of end-ball, where the basketball has to be passed to a team mate standing over the opponent team’s end line to score

2. Variation: once a point is scored, the player who receives the ball on the end line gets a free shot on the hoop from

This warm up will get student’s heart rates up and warms up their muscles for the lesson. The shooting variation ties in the warm up to the lesson of the day.

Progressions:

1. Goal-receivers can dribble in closer to the hoop for a shot

2. Goal-receivers must shoot from where they caught the ball

3. Balls can be rebounded if shot is missed to continue on play, or thrown in properly if the shot is scored

Teaching points:

1. Use all space available, spread out

Organization:

-students will be split into four teams, two courts will be played at once

- boundaries will be made with cones

- teams will play 3 minute games then switch opponents

Skill development one: wall shots

Aim:

1. Students will all get a basketball and find a space on the wall

2. Teacher will lead students through four stages of a shot

3. Students will work on one stage at a time, and progress through all four stages

The purpose of this drill is to have students shoot against a wall so they are focused more on technique than a target.

Progressions:

1. Backspin (basic shot)

2. Pivot to square up, then shoot

3. Pivot to square up, deep knee bend, and then shot

  1. 4.Various spots on the court, squaring up and shooting

Organization:

- Each student will need a basketball and a space on the wall.

Skill development two: spot shooting

Aim:

1. Students are paired up and told to find a basket to shoot on (can be more than one pair at each hoop)

2. One student shoots while their partner rebounds

3. Shots are taken from different spots on the court

4. After 10 shots, roles are reversed.

The purpose of this drill is to get students lots of practice shooting, and to encourage them to try shots from different places.

Progressions:

1. Started shooting close to the hoop

2. Added spots further from hoop

3. Had a contest: students were timed for one minute each, each spot on the court was given a different amount of points depending on distance from the hoop

Teaching Points:

1. Maintain proper technique from all spots

2. Don’t shoot far away enough that technique is sacrificed

3. Keep body square to the hoop

Organization:

- each pair will need a ball

- baskets will need to be shared by several groups

Skill development three: shooting under pressure

Aim:

1. Students will line up on the court in three different spots: defenders on end-line, shooters on free-throw line, and pass-receivers close to sidelines.

2. Defenders throw the ball to the shooter then “shut down” the space between them

3. Depending on where the defender positions themselves, the shooter has the choice to shoot the ball, or pass to the pass receiver.

4. Students rotate clockwise

The purpose of this drill is to have students make appropriate decisions on-the-ball, and recognize when there is an appropriate time to shoot.

Progressions:

1. Defenders are passive

2. Defenders are active

3. Shooters can take 2 dribbles to get open for a shot

Teaching Points:

1. Shooters: shoot if the defenders are cutting off the pass

2. Defenders: choose to either shut down shot or pass

3. Keep eyes up and ball close to body in triple threat position to protect it

Organization:

- students will need to be in three lines on each court and rotate every time.

- Defending lines will need balls

Culminating Activity: 3 V 3 Game-play

Aim:

1. Have students apply shooting in a game-like situation

The purpose of this as our culminating activity is to help students understand when shooting is used in the context of the game.

Progressions:

1. Shots from outside the key are worth extra points

2. Fouls called with free-throws taken to maximize shooting

Teaching Points:

1. Don’t force shot- work to get open first

2. Focus on technique (knees bent, square to hoop, elbow tucked in, etc.)

Organization:

- four teams of 5 or 6 will be made, two games will be played at once

- teams with extra players will rotate having one student help officiate

  1. -pinnies will be used to separate teams
