Bioretention Cell Detoxification Research Program

The Bioretention Cell Detoxification Research Program has several research objectives including:

  • To develop effective, inexpensive sensing techniques and instrumentation for biofilm activity in bioretention cells.
  • To determine how to best model the efficacy and role of biofilm activity in bioretention cells through in situ observations of stormwater quality treatment.

This research is supported by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation and the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund. The program uses the Bioretention Cell Detoxification Laboratory (BCDL) located in Parking Lot 6 at the University of Victoria to collect observations of biofilm activity and their impact on stormwater quality. This laboratory houses a number of highly sensitive pieces of equipment to test several innovative methods for observing biofilm activity non-destructively. More information on this project will be posted soon.
