This site primarily consists of links to texts and images, many of which are on remote sites. As well, the on-site images are linked to directly, as they were too numerous to make separate pages for each one. Thus in most cases, after studying the text or image, you will need to use the "BACK" feature of your browser to return to the page you were working from.
The images for each figure are presented roughly chronologically. This will enable you to see how the representation of a figure changes, whether dressed or nude, bearded or clean shaven (only applicable to males, except where noted by Herodotus), and which scenes are depicted. If you are unfamiliar with Greek history and dating conventions, read the time line first to get an overview. The list of iconographical attributes shows how the gods can be identified.
Unlike the images, the texts are grouped by topic for each figure. This will enable you to see what variations exist in different accounts. Although they are not listed chronologically, it is still important to know when a passage dates from since the literature covers a period of almost one thousand years. The time line lists the authors in their time periods and provides links to biographical information at Perseus. Again, you can see how perceptions of a figure or situation change over the years.
