Helen Moewaka Barnes

Helen Moewaka Barnes is the Director of the Whariki Research Group, a Maori social science research team with a multi-disciplinary, utilisation focus, based at Massey University in New Zealand/Aotearoa. Whariki works across a broad range of areas including identity, youth well being and conceptualising indigenous science, knowledge and practice. She is a principal investigator on several projects including a multi disciplinary, three year Health Research Council of New Zealand project examining relationships between health of people and the health of environments. Using qualitative interviews, GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and quantitative data analysis, the project is in collaboration with local Maori organisations to develop knowledge relevant to local, national and international policy. She is involved in the development of national and international ecohealth networks and has published locally and internationally, including papers in Health Promotion International, the Social Policy Journal of New Zealand and a forthcoming co-authored chapter in an international publication, Handbook of Social Research Ethics.
