Read (off the ball):  At the start of the point, players must 'read' the play and decide where to position themselves on the court or field.

Respond (off the ball): Upon recognizing specific cues, players must 'respond' and possibly move so that they will be ready to perform the required on the ball skill. This often occurs in the form of a split step.

React (on the ball): This occurs as the player comes in contact with the playing object.  Players must 'react' to the speed, trajectory, force, etc. of the object and execute the appropriate skill.

Recover (off the ball): After reacting, players must 'recover' to get ready to read the play again.
