Writing with the Elements

Seminars and Workshops page

"The worst poverty is not to live / In a physical world."--Wallace Stevens

This creative writing workshop is designed to celebrate and explore our deep, lifelong immersion in, relations with, and dependence upon the elements: air, earth, fire, and water. Participants will divide into two groups and will work both with Ann Fisher-Wirth (Earth, Water) and Patrick Lawler (Air, Fire). Through several short free-writing exercises, participants will develop materials for poetry, prose poetry, or creative nonfiction drawing upon their lives in this "physical world."

Workshop Leaders

Ann Fisher-Wirth is professor of English at the University of Mississippi. Her third book of poems, Carta Marina, will be published by Wings Press in April 2009. In 2006 she was President of ASLE. She teaches American literature, environmental literature, and poetry workshops and seminars at the University of Mississippi and is part of the low-residency MFA faculty at Chatham University.

Patrick Lawler is associate professor and director of the writing program at SUNY College of Environment and Forestry. His third book of poems, Feeding the Fear of the Earth, won the Many Mountains Moving Poetry Prize. He is also part of the Creative Writing Program at LeMoyne College, where he teaches creative writing, playwriting, and writing for performance.
