Space and Place in British Columbia
Call for Papers
The Call for Papers is now closed.
This call for papers is also available in PDF format.
We invite scholars in all disciplines to explore how space and place, broadly defined, have been conceived and experienced in British Columbia. We encourage panels and papers with diverse approaches to this theme, including: divisions and relationships between private and public spaces; the expropriation and development of space and place; the political contestation and designation of space and place; the movement of people across space (and among places); the representation and imagination of space and place; and the theoretical delineation of space and place. Proposals for papers or panels that place British Columbia within transnational or comparative contexts are welcome.
Deadline for Proposals: September 15, 2008.
Individual paper and panel proposals will be considered. Individual papers should include an abstract (250 words maximum) and one page curriculum vitae. Panel proposals should include a short description (250 words) of the theme for the session, as well as abstracts for each paper and one page curriculum vitae for each participant. While we strongly encourage panel proposals, the committee reserves the right to rearrange panels. In addition to standard panels, the conference will be organizing several sessions with pre-circulated papers. For these sessions, the papers will be available in advance on the conference website. Rather than beginning with presentations by the authors, these sessions will start with a discussant’s critique of each paper. At the end of this presentation, the authors will be given a chance to respond. Questions and comments from the audience will follow. Members of the audience at these sessions are strongly encouraged to read the pre-circulated papers. Numbers for this format will be limited, so if you would like your paper or panel to be considered for a session of this kind, please indicate this at the top of your abstract.
Correspondence may be in either English or French.
