Lesson Eight

The final lessons for this unit will take place in the form of a round robin tournament where each team plays each other once and the top two play off and the bottom two play off on the last day. The students will have been given some options for their warm-up routine and developed it the week previous. The routine would have to include an element of warming up the muscles and getting the blood flowing and practicing offensive and defensive skills. The final games will take place outdoors.

Lesson Focus:

Cooperation in play among peers

  1. Making Decisions

  2. Supporting the ball carrier

  3. Knowing when to pass, dribble or shoot

  4. Guarding and defending as a unit

Tactical Problem

  1. Penetrating the defence and attacking the goal

  2. Defending space and players – ultimately defending the goal

Introductory task/game:

Team Warm-up

Options may include:

  1. Lining up on sideline and running across field as the leader of the day has them perform commands such as high knees, side shuffle, jog, sprint, etc.

  2. Lining up in pairs and doing 1-2 laps of the field; either jogging or having the pairs at the end sprint to the front and so on.

Warm-ups should include some key stretching

Skill/Concept Development tasks/games:

Options may include:

  1. Shuttles, “square”

  2. 3 v 2, crossing

Should include elements of dribbling, passing, shooting and game strategy

Game: 6 v 6 Field Hockey

  1. Students play in half the field with nets on original sidelines

  2. Students may line up however their team decides: 3-2-1, 1-2-3, 2-2-2, etc.

  3. While the object of the game is to score, students should focus on fair play and cooperation

  4. The teacher may ask the students to focus on a particular skill/strategy for the day, especially if they notice students struggling

Game Aim – penetrating the defence to score & cooperative play

3 rules

1. Can only shoot from within the circle – shots cannot be above the knee

2. When there is a free hit, players must be 5 yards away from the hitter

  1. 3.When ball goes out of bounds, possession goes to the team that did not knock it out

Conclusion:

  1. What tactical problems did your team encounter today?

  2. One thing you want to work on next game – team and individual

  3. Any modifications?

  4. Putting equipment away
