Pass and Shoot
Game/Task Outline

Tactical Problem: Using space in attack and attacking the goal.
Skill Development: Attacking the goal, creating space in attack, and using that created space to receive a pass and shoot for goal.

Teaching Points:
  • Spatial awareness with teammate to pass to and receive a pass from on the run. (i.e.. pass ahead of your teammate, cover the area he/she came from and prepare to receive pass)
  • Give and Go type idea. Give the ball up, make a cut off the ball to an open area to receive a pass for a shot.
  • Students focus on pass control, accuracy, and timing of teammates run.
  • Shooting focus on technique using instep of foot, body position, non kicking foot placement, and head up looking to goal.
  • Keeping up with the pace. Important to receive the passes on the run. No passes should drag a student behind. It is more efficient if the pass is in front of the student/player, rather than behind them.
  • Proper passing technique. Inside of foot, using both feet. Square up to target, then while using proper weight transfer and force generation, step with non dominant foot and shoot with dominant foot.

Using this diagram, the blue player begins by passing the ball to the green player while moving. After release of pass, blue player covers green player's original position and runs towards the net. Green player passes back to blue player, where the blue player shoots and green player seeks a rebound. This game reemphasizes tactics taught in previous games, 3-Man-Weave and Grid Passing.

Organizational Points:
  • Can have another game in progress on the other half of the field, or same field if designed properly. Two separate games can proceed on same half field as long as they are parallel. The only downfall is that there might be problems with passes interrupting the other game.
  • Set-up cones and use demos to explain drill to students.
  • Have students shag their own ball.
  • Have students partner up. (i.e.. #1 get a ball, #2 line up for drill) Partners take turns passing and shooting.
  • Increase complexity by adding a goal tender, or require the students to shoot for targets in the net. In addition, require longer passes on the run with accuracy.
  • If there are no nets set up cones in a safe area to shoot at.
