Rationale

Introduction - Who, What, Why and Where of our lesson plan.

This four lesson mini-unit on floor hockey was designed using the TGfU (Teaching Games for Understanding) teaching style while working within the confines of the British Columbian IRP. The unit is related to the games category within the BC IRP or more specifically territory/invasion games. The lessons were created for a Grade 8 Physical Education class and is meant to cater to a variety of skill levels, increase interest and allow students to discover skills by increasing tactical awareness by participating in both small-sided and full-sided games.

The games that we use within the unit help students to work on both on-the-ball and off-the-ball skills that are associated with floor hockey. Keep in mind that these skills can be transfer to other territory/invasion games such as field hockey, soccer or hand-ball. Games like Follow the Bean bag  help the students to identify space while 4 Goal Hockey focuses on passing and using width and depth in order to score. Each game is designed to be able to modify by either the teacher or the student. This will help the student learn the tactical problem that is posed to them and therefore increase success.

The Unit is specifically designed to take place within a gymnasium, but it can be modified for both outdoor court and field. Prior to starting the unit, make sure you have the appropriate amount of sticks, pucks, pinnies and cones/spots. There should be enough sticks for the entire class so that each student will feel like they are a part of the lesson and their learning. The goal of our unit is to keep all students active and involved while they begin to understand the purpose of the game.
