Lesson Plans The following lessons are the lessons that we used when teaching this dance to a group of grade ones.
Lesson 1:
Objectives: - Students will identify, find and use open spaces in the gym - Students will practice skipping in different pathways and directions - Students will find, keep and skip to a steady beat with and without music
Introduction: - Run 2 laps around the gym, come and sit in the circle - Discuss finding own empty space. Run and find an empty space. Use your eyes and find another open space. Run to that space. Repeat.
Development: - Introduce skipping as a "step-hop." Have a child demonstrate skipping for class. Work through movement with students: "take a step forward on one foot, followed by a small hop on the same foot," repeat until students are smooth and rhythmical. - Show how you can be happy when you would skip. Sad. Get student demos. - Talk about directions and pathways. (forward, backwards, sideways, zig-zag, curvy, etc.) Remind students that they do not have to skip in circles around the gym. - Remind students of light, quite skipping not elephant steps.
- Ask students if they know how to keep beat and how they do it in music class (tapping beat on hands) - Keep a steady beat together clapping - Ask student to demonstrate skipping to the steady beat - Clap and count for students to all skip to beat - Skip to steady beat with music.
Closure: - Thank students for listening. Remind them of light feet and skipping in all pathways and directions.
Lesson 2:
Objectives: - Students will continue skipping using pathways, directions etc. - Students will develop unique hiding shapes - Students will put together skipping and hiding in choreography. - Students will develop unique starting shapes
Introduction: - Skip around the gym 2 times and sit on the circle - Ask students to remember the qualities of skipping that are important to remember
Development: - Find an open space. Practice skipping in different pathways and directions. - Skip for 7 skips, jump and freeze for 1. Practice. - Talk about game of hide and seek. How would you look if you were hiding behind a tree, under a bench, behind some stairs...etc. Have students demonstrate. - Remind students they are showing what they would look like if they were hiding and that they cannot dance if they are actually hiding under a bench or on the stage etc. - Have students practice numerous hiding shapes. Have students demonstrate their shapes and highlight what you like about each. Talk about levels. - Ask students how they would skip if they were excited and playing a game at recess. Introduce recess imagery. - Practice playful skipping. - Skip playfully for 7, jump and freeze in hiding shape on 8. - Practice to the beat with and without music.
Closure: - Divide Class in half and have half perform while the other half forms a respectful audience. - Circle time - talk about things to remember for next time - interesting hiding shapes, light feet and good listening.
Lesson 3:
Objectives: - Students will continue to practice skill of skipping - Students will work in AB partner relationships - Students will skip/hide and skip/jump in partners, using imagery
Introduction: -Skip one lap forwards, one lap backwards, one lap free choice, then come to circle - Listen to music, keeping the beat in different ways for each part (clapping, on knees, on floor)
Development: - Review skip and hide (7 and 1) Practice with music - Introduce partner relationships. Assign partners - Partner A skips for 7, hides for 1, and freezes, then partner B skips for 7, hides for 1 and freezes. Emphasize remaining in hiding shape while partner is dancing, and who moves when. - Student demonstrations - Practice with and without music - Talk about what would happen if you were hiding and you got got (jump). Have students demonstrate. - Practice skip and jump without music, to the beat. Practice with music. - Put whole thing together to music - 4 skip and hides, 3 skip and jumps alternating partners ABABABA.
Conclusion: - Divide Class in half and have half perform while the other half forms a respectful audience. - Remind students to remember whether they were A or B and briefly discuss as a reminder the imagery of the dance.
Lesson 4:
Objective: - Students will work in AB partner relationships to complete dance - Students will run in time with the music in a safe manner - Students will discuss and demonstrate a collapse - Students will put together the complete dance to the music
Introduction: -Skip one lap forwards, one lap backwards, one lap free choice, then come to circle - Listen to music, keeping the beat in different ways for each part (clapping, on knees, on floor) - Review skip and hide, skip and jump and the part of the dance covered previously
Development: - Assign new partners based on who remembers being partner A and who remembers being partner B. - Review and practice the first part of the dance (skip and hide, skip and jump) - Talk about imagery of bell ringing and what you do when you are on the playground and the bell rings. Talk about running safely and not hitting, bumping anyone. - Talk about collapse. Ask for student demos of what a collapse looks like. Get a variety of possibilities - Practice 11 counts of running with 1 collapse without the music. - Practice with the music. - Put whole dance together. - Practice - Divide Class in half and have half perform while the other half forms a respectful audience.
Conclusion: - Discuss with class what they liked/disliked about the dance. - Talk about what they noticed about their groups.
