Introduction to the Dance

This movement sequence is based on the events that take place at the Winter Olympics.  The children are athletes participating in the Winter Olympics.  They will be practicing and competing in their favorite Olympic winter sport. They will be part of the excitement of the events surrounding the Olympics, and will feel the pride and glory of representing their nation at the Opening Ceremonies.

Entry and exit abilities:

Before beginning this dance we expect that students:

  • Will have prior experience with dance and movement

  • Will have some experience creating simple movement sequences alone and with others

  • Will have had some experience with listening, recognizing and moving to the beat of the music

After learning the dance, we expect that students will be able to:

  • Select and perform simple movement sequences using elements of body awareness, space awareness, qualities, and relationships

  • Use the creative process to develop dance patterns, alone and with others

Suggestions on how to use the dance:

The dance can be adapted to meet the needs and abilities of students from kindergarten through grade 5.  There is the opportunity to use the first part of the dance (about one minute long) for younger students and then the entire dance for the older grades.

The dance could be adapted to fit with similar themes, such as the Summer Olympics, BC Summer Games or any special events happening in the community by changing the content and imagery of the individual movement sequences that the students create.
