While there were few written records left of the actual criminal proceedings, as was common in Victoria's justice system in this era, some documents have survived, most notably the chargebooks relating to the arrest of Joseph Lews ("Portugeues Joe"), the first man arrested for the murder of Johnston Cochrane. We offer them here in their original form as scanned copies of the original papers. While the handwriting can be difficult to read to a modern observer, these documents are an interesting artifact of Victoria's early legal system and are worth viewing even if not every word can be discerned due to the illegibility of the writing. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
