Stained Glass
Originally in the old chapel Michaud arranged “Every pane of [stained] glass … in symbolic numbers. The eight windows on each side stood for the beatitudes. The two sections in each meant the Old and New Testament: four squares in the arch signified evangelists. Which combined with eight other squares in the main part of the window commemorated the twelve apostles.” (McDonald) However, when the church was moved in 1886 the stain glass did not hold up. The symbolic design of the stain glass that was placed in 1910 by A.H. Ray is not the same but is obvious with the religious association on each centre piece inside of the window panes.
Ray implemented the Instruments of Christ torture on the left: Crucifix:-Crown of Thorns: Longinus sword: Roman soldier Longinus mocked Christ. Jesus looked down at him and said something to him. Longinus pierced the side of Christ and had an epiphany and converted over. Palm thongs: Christ was condemned and was beaten with palm thongs. On the right is the IHS symbol: I.H.S. the first three letters in Greek of Jesus’ name. Iota-Eta-Sigma. In Latin there is no J so Jesus is Iesus in most places of the Chapel to keep with tradition of Latin mass, but on the sister of St. Ann's crosses is JHS.
Each window inside the cathedral has a Christian symbol in the centre of it:
