Carvings

Three hundred and fifty rosaries in the cathedral have been carved out of wood by Michaud himself and painted over with gold leaf. This inscribed beauty is recognized as a labour of love for the sisters and Michaud’s French Catholic faith.

The first medallion
Omega Carving
is carved with the triangle of trinity and with symbols for Alpha and Omega. The triangle represents the Trinity (three persons in one God). The Alpha and Omega represent God as the beginning and the end of all things. In Genesis: God declares he is everything “I am the Alpha and Omega” This medallion is placed directly above the alter because it is the holiest place in the cathedral.

The last medallion is hidden behind the organ. It is the Harp representing the book of Psalms in the Old Testament written by David who sung to the music of the harp. Where there used to be choir performances “singers who rendered the repertoires of the masters sacred music.”

Between 1858-1913 there used to be a choir performances in place of where this organ now stands. The choir was so esteemed by the community it was quoted as having “singers who rendered the repertoires of the masters’ sacred music.”(MacDonald, 14.) In 1913 the sisters asked the Cassavant brothers to make an organ for them. The Cassavant brothers’ organs were of the finest French Canadian quality. They named their 1st organ Marching Thunder.
