The University of Victoria is a mid-size school (~19000 students) located on Vancouver Island, off the west coast of Canada. Greater Victoria (population 325,000) offers all of the amenities common to major cities in Canada, but its unparalleled natural beauty makes it one of the most desirable places to live in North America. Ocean, lake, forest, and mountain recreation areas are all located within the city and a short distance from the University. The Chemistry Department at UVic boasts a unique fusion of cutting-edge researchers and an extremely collegial atmosphere. Students thrive in the environment both personally and scientifically. The mission of the Hof group is to create an atmosphere that the students (and supervisor) can enjoy on a daily basis, while preparing students to make critical contributions to chemical and biomedical science. Students interested in both the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees are encouraged to apply. Contact Fraser directly, and also contact Carol Jenkins for formal information about how to apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at UVic. You can find general information about grad studies at UVic and admission requirements at http://chemistry.uvic.ca/graduates.html. New graduate students may start at any time of the year; however most start in May, September, or January. Canadian and International students are eligible for UVic graduate fellowships if they have first class standing. Students who can TA labs as usual receive a minimum graduate stipend of ~ $21,500 - fellowship holders receive more. Students entering in the M.Sc. program may switch to the Ph.D. program after one year, provided they meet the standards for entry into the Ph.D. program. The time required for completion of the degrees varies; however it is typically 2½-3 years for a M.Sc. thesis and 4½-5 years for a Ph.D. thesis. ![]() The Bob Wright Centre at UVic, home to the Hof group research labs, opened in fall 2008. |
