Learning to Canoe
Students need to learn a common core of skills:
•Transporting & Launching
-How to lift and carry
-Getting in successfully (from land and from in water)
-Launching from a dock
-Beach entry
•Paddling Skills
-J-stroke
-Stern pry
-Canadian stroke
-Pitch stroke
-Indian stroke
•Rescue and Capsize drills
-Capsize drills
-Emptying swamped canoe
-Throwing a rescue rope
Safety
•Training – Preparedness – Common Sense
•Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times
•Helmets in white water conditions
•Must wear footgear
•All students should learn and be competent in self-rescue techniques – skillful with a throw rope
Training
The YMCA-YWCA offers outdoor adventure programs in both canoeing and kayaking.
The canoeing program includes the introductory stages and practice their paddling along Glinz Lake while taking in the nature.
