Learning to Canoe


Students need to learn a common core of skills:


  1. Transporting & Launching

  2. -How to lift and carry

  3. -Getting in successfully (from land and from in water)

  4. -Launching from a dock

  5. -Beach entry

  6. Paddling Skills

  7. -J-stroke

  8. -Stern pry

  9. -Canadian stroke

  10. -Pitch stroke

  11. -Indian stroke

  12. Rescue and Capsize drills

  13. -Capsize drills

  14. -Emptying swamped canoe

  15. -Throwing a rescue rope

 

Safety



  1. Training – Preparedness – Common Sense

  2. Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) must be worn at all times

  3. Helmets in white water conditions

  4. Must wear footgear

  5. All students should learn and be competent in self-rescue techniques – skillful with a throw rope


Training



The YMCA-YWCA offers outdoor adventure programs in both canoeing and kayaking.


The canoeing program includes the introductory stages and practice their paddling along Glinz Lake while taking in the nature.
