Exit Level
By the end of this unit, students should be comfortable and familiar with the outdoor recreation and adventure activities. They should have a sense of how process vs. outcome, as well as, team building contributes to their success. The student’s fitness levels and physical abilities will have increased, perhaps causing them to have interest in pursuing more challenging activities for the Fridays. For example, some groups may choose to try the high ropes course either later in the week or for one or more of the Fridays in May/June. Thus, while the unit does not technically finish at the end of April, the focus in PE will be on soccer and baseball. Students can and should incorporate some of their leadership and team building skills learned from the outdoor recreation and adventure programs in the next units (and throughout their life!).
Entry Level
Students will have developed their fitness levels throughout their PE programs, however, as outdoor education can be quite demanding, students will be expected to develop their fitness further in order to carry out the skills they learn. The majority of the students will not be familiar with outdoor adventure/recreation programs; therefore, this unit will be considered an introductory stage. Students must be willing to come out of their comfort zones but also know and communicate their limits to their peers and the teacher. The first week will focus on the ropes courses and team building activities to emphasize a trusting and inclusive community among the students.
