Ropes Course

Ropes Course

Description

  1. Individual and group physical challenges involving teamwork skills and individual commitment

  2. Involves solving movement problems, facing risks involving height, performing under pressure, supporting others, and learning how positive teamwork supports achieving more than students could on their own

  3. Extensive use of safety equipment is required

  4. Refer to the “The Teamwork Learning Sequence” for details on how to progress through a ropes course

Types of Courses

  1. Can be built among trees or utility poles:

  2. -Trees are more visually pleasing but can be costly for maintenance (environmentally and financially)

  3. -Utility poles are more expensive initially, typically require less maintenance and it is easier to choose a layout

  4. Courses have multiple levels of difficulty ranging from novice, intermediate and advanced

  5. -Naturally students will begin with the lowest level until they have mastered it and move to more challenging tasks

Safety

  1. All ropes courses should be inspected before each use

  2. Ropes courses should not be used in rainy weather

  3. Safety equipment must be used properly as well as adequate supervision and training in belaying techniques

Training

The YMCA-YWCA offers outdoor adventure programs in both low and high ropes courses:

  1. Both offer a variety of challenges and team building opportunities

  2. May include co-operative games as a progression from low to high ropes
