Rock Climbing



Description


  1. Rock climbing can be the most intense adventure sport

  2. It is more individual oriented but can be enhanced by support from peers

  3. Students can build on their confidence and skills and select more difficult courses as they progress


Learning to Rock Climb


A course for beginner rock climbers should focus on two main skills:


  1. Belaying

  2. -Dynamic and static

  3. -Anchors

  4. -Hip belay

  5. -Belay communication and signals

  6. Climbing techniques

  7. -Body position

  8. -Three points of contact

  9. -Climbing holds (hands and feet)

  10. Lay back

  11. Chimney

  12. Undercling

  13. Jam series

  14. Rappelling (outdoor courses)

  15. -Breaking system

  16. -Rapeling techniques

  17. -belaying


Students will start on a climbing wall before progressing to outdoor climbing.


Students should also consider equipment and knot techniques:


  1. Equipment

  2. -Proper footwear, clothing and helmets

  3. -Ropes, slings/harnesses, carabiners

  6. -Types of knots

 

Safety



  1. Two most important elements in climbing safety: conditions of climbing face & equipment

  2. Select climbs appropriate for students’ skill and confidence level

  3. Equipment and Climbing Walls should be checked over each time

  4. Matting and/or soft cushioning placed at base of climbing walls

  5. Students should receive intensive training of safety systems, equipment, basic climbing skills, ability to belay and communication

  6. Supervision is critical – for climber and belayer


Training



The YMCA-YWCA offers outdoor adventure programs that provide proper climbing preparation and training.


Climbs are offered on real rock face:


Cougar Rock - three climbs varying in difficulty


Nicola Rock - located outside main camp area – slightly more challenging and higher
