Receiving
Phase 1 - Preparing to Catch
-keep your eyes on the ball
-good base position
-stick held out in front of the body
-top hand halfway up the stick
-bottom hand at the bottom
Phase 2 - Receiving the Ball
-keep your eyes on the ball
-catch the ball above the pocket so
it rolls into it
-begin to bring the stick closer
to your body
-weight on front foot
Phase 3 - Absorbing the Ball
- rock backwards with the ball
- transfer weight to your back foot
-keep your head up so you can
read the play
Phase 4 - Positioning the Ball
-cradle the ball to bring it to
where you want to hold it
-prepare to make a pass or shoot
depending on the play
Bio-mechanical Principles for Receiving a Pass
1. Prep: Side on stance to the direction of the passer. The stance is somewhat open. Hold a good base position with the stick held up and in front.
2. Wind-Up: Bring the stick forward to prepare to absorb the ball; the open pocket faces the direction of throw. The top arm is fully extended, bottom hand stays on the bottom of the stick.
3.Force: As the ball approaches and makes contact with the stick the stick is drawn backwards by bending the elbow of the top hand. The stick is brought in toward the body and past it (if need be) to absorb the ball.
4. Recovery: Cradle the ball to position it, stagger feet to assume a base position and prepare to read, respond, and react to the play.
