Lesson 3 - Using the spike approach

Tactical Problem:   Setting up to attack.
Skill Development :   Quick transition off the net to allow time for a proper spike approach

Teaching Points

Tactic

  • Move off net when ball comes over.
  • Anticipate direction of pass
  • Open up to court.

Skill

  • Back up on balls of feet.
  • Start low with knees bent.
  • Square shoulders to ball.

Organizational Points

  • Groups of six students
  • Can fit two groups on one court.
  • Setter can throw the ball or set it.
  • Variation can be hitting from behind the attack line.

Questions:

Q: Why does the hitter back off the net?
A: To get a good approach.

Q: Why is a good approach important?
A: For good timing and to allow you to jump higher.

Q: When do you start your approach?
A: Just after the setter has set the ball.
