SSHRCC Research Grant
OBJECTIVES
This grant aims to document the role of homophony avoidance (different
meanings expressed by different forms) in Salish and neighbouring languages.
It explores the role of maintaining contrasting meanings by having contrasting
forms, primarily in Salish languages, but also in Wakashan languages and creoles.
It also investigates the role that making changes to the forms of words (rather
than adding affixes) has in expressing different meanings.
