Learning outcomes

  1. understand the molecular basis for the properties of everyday materials
  2. determine the electronic structure of an atom and understand the theoretical basis for the arrangement of electrons
  3. determine the nature of chemical bonding in molecules and ions using the periodic table
  4. predict the shape of covalent molecules
  5. identify types of intermolecular forces and predict those that are important for a given molecule
  6. relate the chemical and physical properties of substances to molecular structure, chemical bonding, and intermolecular interactions
  7. identify organic functional groups and understand their chemical reactivities
  8. identify and name some simple organic compounds
  9. laboratory: basic chemical techniques, as well as skills in following directions, making observations, recording data accurately, and report writing are introduced in the laboratory.
