Lesson 1

Tactical Problems: Movement to open space, passing and receiving


Introductory task/game

Chinese Gates

Students attempt to advance between zones without being tagged by defensive players in each zone. Once at the opposing end a point is scored for their team. Players always return to the start after scoring a point or being tagged.


Skill/Concept development tasks/games

Underhand Spin Pass

Partner Passing

Students will begin 3m. apart

Students will pass to their partners using the underhand spin pass as outlined.

Cues:

“Load and Release” – Load your wrist back and release it forward to allow for spin

  1.   “Point at your target” – As you release the ball your back hand should point towards your target


Moving w/ a Partner Spin Pass

In groups of two to three students will move down the field passing to each other

A focus will be put on passing to a location so the partner can run onto the ball

Partner without the ball will retreat slightly behind the partner with the ball so they can come forward onto the ball

Cues:

“Out front” – pass to a location ahead of your partner

“Get behind” – partner without the ball should be behind the partner with the ball


Culminating Game:

4 vs. 4 Endball

During this version of Endball students are allowed to move throughout the playing area passing the ball to their team-mates. The focus should be put on moving to open space.

Lesson 2 

Tactical Problems: Movement to open space , passing and receiving, marking an opponent


Introductory task/game

Follow the Leader In a Grid – 15m x 15m

Students will follow behind their partner who is carrying the ball

Partner in front can choose the pace they are moving at

When teacher yells stop partner in front does a two foot jump stop and lightly tosses the ball over their head behind them, the partner behind must catch the ball

Rotate after each stop

Progression

Teacher will not provide any warning before yelling stop

Students will be able to move freely throughout the area and stop when they are ready to

If player behind does not catch the ball the player in front receives one point and remains in front

If the player behind catches the ball they receive one point and move in front

3 v. 1 Square Game – 3m x 3m grid

Students will be in groups of four and will make themselves a 3m x 3m grid

3 players will begin on the outside of the grid, 1 player on the inside of the grid

Refinement:

If the players on the outside is successful the square becomes smaller

If the player on the inside is successful the square becomes larger

Grid can be made larger for 3 v. 2


Culminating Game:

4 vs. 4 Four Goal Rugby – 10m x 10m

Students set up a grid with goals located midway between the cones on each side of the square. The grid will be a 10m x 10m square. To score, a team must touch the ball on the ground inside one of the four scoring areas after a specified number of passes (3 passes).  After every turnover the possessing team gets one free pass without time limit.

Lesson 4

Tactical Problems: Passing backwards, accelerating onto the ball, marking an opponent


Introductory task/game

Two Player Tag

Players are in groups of 5-6 and they have one ball between them.  They start with 2 people it.  The 2 people who are it attempt to tag the passers while they have the ball.  The passers are not allowed to run with the ball they have to pass immediately before they are tagged.  If they are tagged then they have to pass the ball and then they are it as well.  The game is over when the last person is tagged with the ball.


Rules:

1) Students may not run with the ball

2) Once you have been tagged with the ball you join the attacking team to try and tag other students

3) After everyone has been tagged with the ball the game concluded and two new student are it


Skill/Concept development tasks/games

4 Person Realignment Drill

During this drill students are grouped in fours. Students must move down the field passing the ball backwards to their partners. Passes should include cuts, crosses and switches. This drill can progress to a 4 vs. 3 drill where students must pass the ball before being tagged by opponents.


Culminating Game:

Touch End Ball

In this version of Endball students must move down the field passing to their team-mates attempting to score a try in their opponents end zone. Players are allowed to run freely. If a player is tagged they must stop and pass the ball to one of their team-mates.

Lesson 3 

Tactical Problems: Passing Backwards, accelerating onto the ball, marking an opponent


Introductory task/game

Realignment Drill

Students are separated into pairs or groups of 3 depending on the numbers.  Students will be lined up within the sectioned area where they will jog up the field passing back and forth but the player with the ball must accelerate past their partner following the reception of the ball.  This introduces the concept of accelerating while traveling with the ball and passing backwards.

Students will be in groups of four and will make themselves a 3m x 3m grid
