There is a deadline of 15 January for domestic applicants wishing to be admitted in September of the same year. All application materials must be received at the Office of Graduate Admissions and Records, Faculty of Graduate Studies by this date. Applications received by this date will also be considered for financial awards. Please note that this is a departmental deadline.

International applicants are asked to submit applications by 15 December for September entry.

Application forms can be downloaded from the university's websites or requested by email.

In addition to application forms and application fee, applicants to the Department of Linguistics should ensure that the following materials reach the Graduate Admissions and Records (GAR) of the University of Victoria by the deadline date:

  1. Two references (there is a form for your referees to fill out which can be downloaded from UVic’s GAR website.)
  2. Official transcripts from all post-secondary academic institutions.
  3. Your statement of intent.
  4. A sample of academic writing (for example, a term paper or MA thesis) if you apply to our doctoral program.
  5. English language proficiency scores if you are an international applicant (see below and refer to the UVic Calendar for details on the language requirements for the Department of Linguistics. If you submit IELTS scores, a minimum of 7.0 overall is required for admission to the Department.)

English language proficiency test results are required of all international applicants to the University of Victoria whose first language is not English and who have not resided in an English-speaking country for three consecutive years immediately prior to the application entry point.

These documents help the Admissions Committee assess which applicants have research goals that the Department is best able to nurture. Being a small department, the Department of Linguistics is careful not to take on more graduate students than it is able to serve.

Complete applications received by the deadline are considered and ranked by the Admissions Committee. Students can expect to be informed of the Department's decision in March.

For further information about any aspect of the application procedure, please contact the Graduate Secretary or the Graduate Advisor in the Department of Linguistics.
