Magnetism

Instructor: Natia Frank

Content: Magnetic Behavior. The concepts of diamagnetism, paramagnetism, magnetic exchange, hysteresis, and DC/AC susceptibility measurements will be discussed within the context of understanding the magnetic behavior of molecular systems. Measurement techniques, including SQUID magnetometers will be discussed in detail. The final class will involve hands-on demonstration of sample measurement in the Quantum Design MPMS XL 5 instrument at UVic.

Delivery: Jan/Feb 2008.

Assessment: A 1-hour written examination.
