Syllabus

Mass spectrometry

Instructor: Scott McIndoe

Content: Modern mass spectrometry. Instrumentation, mass analysis, ionisation techniques and applications will be covered, including establishing the kind of technique best applied to a particular sample. Introduction to the various instruments at UVic, the new ESI-MS in particular; hands-on demonstration of sample acquisition, processing and interpretation on a modern instrument.

Delivery: Four 90-minute lectures at 11 am in Clearihue B346, Wednesdays Oct 17, 24, 31 and Nov 7. Two 1-hour practical sessions (to be scheduled).

Assessment: A 1-hour written examination Nov 14 and an assessed 15 minute in-class presentation.
