Introductory task/game : Ball Tag
Description of game : Within a grid, two people who are “it” must tag others with ball. Once tagged you are also it, game ends when everyone has been tagged.
Aim : To tag everyone in the grid
Structure : Create a small grid 10 x 10 and progressively enlarge the grid.
Rules : Students who are ‘it’ cannot move while in possession of the ball, they cannot throw the ball in order to tag someone. All students must remain inside the grid at all times.
Key tactical and skill application : To begin to understand off the ball movements and to begin understand the concept of creating space and supporting the passer.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games :
Grid (no defender and with defender)
Description of task : In groups of three pass ball from one corner of grid to another making sure to maintain a ‘V’ formation of with passer in order to provide the passer with two passing options at all times. When students begin to grasp concept introduce a defender ( passive at first and then becoming competitive)
Aim : To emphasize and illustrate the importance of supporting the passer. To improve passing abilities as well as off the ball movements.
Structure : Students are split into groups of three and put on a grid
Key tactical and skill application : illustrates ball movement to evade defenders and the importance of maintaining a ‘V’ shape when passing to provide passer with two passing options at all times.
Culminating Game:
End Ball
Aim : To pass the ball into opponents end zone in order to score.
Structure : Students are divided into two teams. Game is played in an area marked by cones or lines on the gym floor.
Rules : Player in possession of the ball cannot move. Defensive players are not allowed to strip the ball from offensive players but may intercept a pass. If the ball is dropped or intercepted it results in a loss of possession and the other team gets the ball. Make rule adjustments regarding game play as necessary.
Key tactical and skill application : To invade the opponents territory in order to score. Make use of support and space during attack.
