2 v 2 Monarch

Purpose
In order to begin introducing students to the tactical awareness necessary for game play, students will be introduced to a volleyball game form.  This game form forces students to engage cognitively with game play, thinking about where to pass the ball and how to move to support teammates.  They are also using the on-the-ball skills taught during the lesson in a game situation.

Culminating Activity
Aim of the Game:
Students begin team play by attempting a continuous rally and then point scoring against another team.
Rules
1.    Ball must be touched twice before going over the net
2.    Ball can only be contacted using the forearm pass
3.    Use underhand toss to start / restart play

Organization
Students, with their partner from the previous activities, will find another team to play against or be assigned a team by the teacher.  They will then begin to play a two on two game using the forearm pass and underhand tosses to restart play.  Winners of each 2-3 minute match will move north and losers move south, so that each team has a new opponent.  Before each new game begins, one player from each team much switch so that new teams are formed.

Possible Modifications
1.    Allow less skilled players to catch the ball and then pass to a teammate
2.    Use badminton nets or cones instead of a full size volleyball net
3.    Increase or decrease the playing area based on student ability.

Modified from Paul Smith class lesson.
