BLOCK PLAN - Four lesson rugby unit


The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  Depending on the response of students this progression could be adapted.

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
*How to create space by passing and receiving ball properly.
*How to move the ball up the field while passing backward. 

Lesson focus:  Basic ball handling skills i.e. passing, 
                       receiving; recognizing space

Skill objective: To pass and receive ball properly in 
                       various situations; understanding 
                       scoring 

Introductory task/game

           1. 2 Corner Drill

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

    1.  4 Corner  Drill
    2.  3 v 2
    3.  Shuttles (only pass back)

Culminating Game: 

 
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
*Finding and moving the ball to open space
*How to create space for teamates
*Decision making i.e. when to pass or when to hold on to ball

Lesson focus:  Running and passing/receiving

Skill objective: Run straight; hit gaps; draw defender 
                       and pass; receiver from depth at pace

Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
*How to maintain possession while invading opposing teams territory
*Scoring the try
*Support
*Realignment
Lesson focus:  Recognizing and using gaps and 
                      overlaps 

Skill objective:  Decision making i.e. pass or run; 
                        moving ball to open space 

Introductory task/game

        1.  4 v 4

Skill/Concept development tasks/games

        1.  Advanced Shuttles
        2.  Recognizing Gaps and Overlaps
 
 

 

Culminating Game: 
         1.  4 v 3 Game

Lesson 4
Tactical Problem
*Moving to support after pass
*Maintaining possession while moving into opponent's space
Lesson focus: Maintaining possession of ball and 
                      supporting teammates; invading 
                      opponent's territory; scoring try's

Skill objective: Decision making; angles of run; 
                       advanced passing and receiving; 
                       keeping play continuous 

Introductory task/game

        1.  3 v 1 v 1

        1.  Extended Shuttles

Culminating Game: 
         1.  Touch Rugby Game
